There are many different varieties of periodontal disease and many ways in which these variations manifest themselves. Scaling is a procedure that meticulously removes the plague and tartar deposits at and under the gum line, while root planning then smooths the root’s surfaces so that the supportive tissues can better attach to the tooth surface. This is done with local anesthesia to aid in your comfort. As with most other bacterial diseases, an antibiotic may be administered to help control, reduce, or eliminate the harmful bacteria.
