The habits of grinding our teeth or clenching our jaws are remarkably common. It’s estimated that almost one out of every three adults indulge in either one or both of these habits every day, often without even realizing it. One out of every ten people grind their teeth while they sleep. And even youngsters can be prone to developing these habits.
This condition — known to dental specialists like the prosthodontist at Tiger Periodontics and Dental Implants as bruxism — can be the source of frequent headaches, jaw soreness, and even tooth loss in severe cases. The common causes for this clenching and grinding are anxiety and stress, but there are some underlying oral health conditions that may be part of the problem. An abnormal bite, crooked or missing teeth, or a sleep disorder may be present. A study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association suggested that smokers and people who use alcohol are twice as likely to grind their teeth.
What can our prosthodontist do for you if you’re experiencing the symptoms of bruxism? After a thorough examination and assessment of your oral health, we will make a determination of the best treatment to correct the condition and prevent permanent damage from occurring. Being fitted for a custom-made appliance can make sure that your bite is applying pressure evenly, so that your teeth won’t be subject to excessive wear. You can be sure that these appliances are comfortable, and are constructed from the latest — and safest — materials.
When it comes to complex dental conditions like bruxism, no one is more experienced or better equipped to provide relief than the prosthodontist at Tiger Periodontics and Dental Implants. We have years of advanced training handling conditions like these, and we help our patients choose the most comfortable and durable options. Please don’t hesitate to contact our office today for an appointment.
