According to historical accounts, Egyptian mummies have been found with gold wires implanted in their jawbones, and human skulls were discovered with stone and other materials used as replacement teeth around 600 A.D. among the Mayans. 

A Swedish orthopedic surgeon by the name of Per-Ingvar Branemark, dubbed the father of the modern dental implant, is credited with discovering the process of fusing bone tissue to titanium, eventually making implants commercially available in 1978. While many advances have been made in the past half-century, titanium is often the metal of choice.

Today’s dental implants have a natural appearance and fit that are virtually indistinguishable from a patient’s other teeth. The crowns, bridges or dentures that are placed on top of the implants are custom-made, ensuring a natural-looking smile.
