Many people have early signs of gum disease and don’t know it even if they have gone to the dentist recently. That’s because many dental examinations don’t routinely check for the early signs of gum disease. However, if left untreated even early stage gingivitis, the most common simple form of gum disease can turn into a much more serious condition that can separate gums from teeth, cause bone and tooth loss and cause tooth restorations to fail. Dr. Jonathan Tiger, offers periodontal therapy to remediate gingivitis and much periodontal surgery in Pomona to treat more serious versions of gum disease to prevent it from causing more damage
Just as bacteria can start the process that causes tooth decay, it can also be the source of gum disease. The bacteria settles between the tooth and gums as debris and plague are deposited there. The bacterial infection causes the gums to pull away from the teeth and form deep pockets between the gum and tooth, which allows the bacteria colonies room to expand further. If the pockets pull the gums far enough away they will no longer be able to support the tooth and it will no longer remain viable. Our doctor will use non-surgical techniques to clean the bacteria colonies out of the pockets and reduce them and calm the tooth’s root in mild cases of gingivitis. In cases where the periodontal disease is moderate to severe our doctor may perform periodontal surgery in Pomona to reduce and reattach the pockets. Our doctor can perform traditional periodontal surgery in Pomona or laser surgery using the LANAP method. The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP), offers an alternative to traditional gum disease treatment, eliminating the use of scalpels or sutures. The laser eliminates the need for cutting the gums but is able to clean away the diseased tissue while protecting the still healthy tissue; this results in the elimination of the disease and the pockets. Because there is no cutting the gums heal faster with less pain. LANAP is also used by our practice for several other dental procedures such as dental implants, gum grafting and All-On-4 dentures. Please don’t take your gums for granted call our office for an appointment.
